Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Belle of Woking'

Summary: 'Evijohill' is a climbing Clematis variety which produces asexual flowers, whereas the flowers of 'Belle of Woking' have both male and female reproductive organs. 'Evijohill' has a moderately narrow leaf blade while the reference variety has a broad leaf. The flowers of 'Evijohill' have 2 colours on the sepal and 'Belle of Woking' has only 1 colour. Although both varieties have double flowers, 'Evijohill' is distinctive because there are 6 to 8 large outer sepals, and an inner rosette of many smaller sepals.

Description:

'Evijohill' is a climbing type Clematis variety which has sterile flowers. There is medium pubescence on the young shoots, consisting of medium length hairs. The leaves are ternate. The blade of the leaflet is short in length and narrow to medium in width. The leaflets are ovate, with an acute to narrow acute apex and a rounded to cordate base. The leaflet blade margins are entire. The leaflets of 'Evijohill' sometimes have two lobes. The leaves are medium green in colour with moderately weak rugosity. The lower side of the leaflets has medium pubescence.

'Evijohill' bears solitary, double flowers, which are medium in diameter and rotate in shape. The flowers face outwards. In lateral view they are concave. There are 6 to 8 large outer sepals, which are free and an inner rosette of many smaller sepals which are overlapping. The flowers of 'Evijohill' have little or very weak fragrance.

'Evijohill' has sepals which are short to medium in length and medium in width. They are obovate to elliptic in shape. In cross-section the sepals are flat to concave. In longitudinal section they are flat to slightly reflexed. The apex is obtuse in shape with an acuminate tip and the base is type 3. The upper side of the sepals of 'Evijohill' has two colours. The main colour of the upper side is light purple to violet blue and there is a red-purple central bar on each sepal. The large, outer sepals are greenish towards the tip. The lower side of the sepal is lighter purple with a light green central bar. The margin of the sepals has moderately strong undulation, and there is no twisting along the longitudinal axis. Flowers of 'Evijohill' have no stamens or pistil.

'Evijohill' flowers on both the previous year's and the current year's growth. It begins flowering early to mid-season (about week 24 in St. Thomas, Ontario).

Origin & Breeding History: 'Evijohill' originated from a mutation of an unknown clematis cultivar. The selection was made in 1994 in the Channel Islands.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Evijohill' were established in the field during the spring of 2002, and observations and measurements were taken during the spring of 2003 at BioFlora, Inc., St. Thomas, Ontario. Eight rooted plants of the candidate and reference varieties were received April 20, 2002 and planted into 11.5cm pots and grown in a polyhouse. Young plants were transplanted to the field on June 3, 2002. Plants were spaced 60cm apart and trained to grow along a trellis. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plant parts of each variety during June 2003. All colour measurements were made using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
