Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'KLECA11225' (MiniFamous Neo Double Deep Yellow) and 'USCAL51505' (Superbells Double Chiffon)

Summary: The plants of 'WNCALSBDBLYEL23' have a spreading growth habit whereas those of 'USCAL51505' have a semi-upright growth habit. The shoot of 'WNCALSBDBLYEL23' is shorter than that of both reference varieties. The upper side of the leaf blade of 'WNCALSBDBLYEL23' is medium green while it is dark green for 'KLECA11225'. The calyx lobe of 'WNCALSBDBLYEL23' is longer than that of both reference varieties. The corolla of 'WNCALSBDBLYEL23' has a medium degree of lobing while that of 'USCAL51505' has an absent or very weak degree of lobing. When fully opened, the inner side of the corolla of 'WNCALSBDBLYEL23' is mainly medium yellow with a darker medium yellow secondary colour along veins whereas that of 'KLECA11225' is darker medium yellow throughout and that of 'USCAL51505' is white throughout. When aged, the inner side of the corolla of 'WNCALSBDBLYEL23' is light yellow while it is medium yellow for 'KLECA11225' and white for 'USCAL51505'. The corolla lobe apex is rounded for 'WNCALSBDBLYEL23' while it is truncate for that of both reference varieties.

COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): mainly medium yellow (closest to RHS 8B) when fully opened, medium yellow (closest to RHS 7A) secondary colour, medium yellow (closest to RHS 7A) when newly opened, light yellow (closest to RHS 8D) aged flower, absent or weak colour change during growing season

Origin & Breeding History: 'WNCALSBDBLYEL23' originated from a controlled cross conducted on May 9, 2018 in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan between the female parent variety 'Sweet Clingel Double Bronz' and the male parent variety 'Million Bells Gran Yellow'. From the resulting progeny, the new variety was selected on May 8, 2019 in Bonsall, California, USA based on flower colour, flower type, branching, abundance of flowers, flowering frequency and timing. Asexual reproduction of 'WNCALSBDBLYEL23' was first conducted by cuttings on May 10, 2019 in Bonsall, California, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'WNCALSBDBLYEL23' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2023 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm hanging baskets on April 29, 2023. Each basket contained 4 cuttings with a total of 5 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, on June 7, 2023. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
