Proposed amendments to the Weed Seeds Order, 2005 (WSO) were published today in the Canada Gazette, Part I with a seventy five (75) day public comment period.
The proposed amendments would include harmful new species that have been identified and would ensure that existing species are classified appropriately. Preventing the introduction of weed species helps preserve the prosperity of Canada's agricultural sector.
The proposed amendments would come into force on November 1, 2016.
We anticipate that there could be minimal compliance costs to some businesses as weed species are added or reclassified as a result of the proposed amendments to the WSO. These businesses may incur additional seed cleaning costs and will need to train staff to recognize the newly added species of weed seeds.
