Summary: The lightsprout of 'Paroli' is medium to large and broad cylindrical in shape whereas the lightsprout of 'Merida' is small to medium sized and spherical. The base of the lightsprout of 'Paroli' has a strong to very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration and an absent or very sparse to sparse pubescence whereas that of 'Merida' has a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration with a medium density of pubescence. The lightsprout tip of 'Paroli' is small in relation to the base whereas it is medium sized in relation to the base for 'Merida'. The stem of 'Paroli' has a low extent of anthocyanin colouration whereas the stem of 'Merida' has an absent or very low intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The flower bud of 'Paroli' has a low extent of anthocyanin colouration while that of 'Merida' has a medium extent of anthocyanin colouration. The plants of 'Paroli' have a high frequency of inflorescences whereas the plants of 'Merida' have an absent to low frequency of inflorescences.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Paroli' (experimental designation 24 205-06) originated from a cross between 569 102-99, as the female parent, and 774 105-99, as the male parent, conducted in 2005 at the NORIKA Nordring, Kartoffelzucht und Vermehruns GmBH breeding station in Gross Luesewitz, Germany. In 2006, the seed resulting from the cross was sown in the greenhouse. The resulting tubers were harvested and planted in the field in 2006 in Gross Luesewitz, Germany. 'Paroli' was selected in 2012 based on negative mass selection for agronomic characteristics and disease resistance.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Paroli' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the 2019 growing season in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 21 metre long row per variety. Each row contained 70 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart with an inter-row spacing of 0.9 metres.
