Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Oriana'

Summary: The anthocyanin colouration at the base of the lightsprout of 'SF Vario' is of medium intensity whereas it is weak for 'Oriana'. The pubescence on the lightsprout of 'SF Vario' is sparse at the base and of medium density at the tip whereas the pubescence is medium to dense at the base and sparse at the tip for 'Oriana'. In relation to the base of the lightsprout, the tip is medium sized for 'SF Vario' whereas it is small for 'Oriana'. The plant foliage structure of 'SF Vario' is intermediate type whereas that of 'Oriana' is stem type. The second pair of lateral leaflets are large for 'SF Vario' whereas they are small to medium for 'Oriana'. The extent of anthocyanin colouration on the flower bud of 'SF Vario' is low whereas it is absent or very low for 'Oriana'. The plants of 'SF Vario' are taller than those of 'Oriana'. The inflorescence is medium to large for 'SF Vario' whereas it is small for 'Oriana'. The anthocyanin colouration on the inner side of the corolla of 'SF Vario' is of medium extent whereas the extent is absent or very low for 'Oriana'. The plants of 'SF Vario' mature late in the season while those of 'Oriana mature mid-season.

Description:

LIGHTSPROUT: medium size, ovoid, few root tips, short lateral shoots
LIGHTSPROUT BASE: medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration, medium proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration, sparse pubescence
LIGHTSPROUT TIP: medium size in relation to base, intermediate between closed and open habit, absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, medium density of pubescence

PLANT: foliage structure is intermediate type where foliage is half-open and stems are partly visible, semi-upright growth habit, matures late

STEM: absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration

LEAF: medium to large outline, intermediate openness to open, medium presence of secondary leaflets, medium to dark green upper side, absent or very low extent and absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of upper side of midrib, absent or very low frequency of coalescence of terminal and lateral leaflets
SECOND PAIR OF LATERAL LEAFLETS: large, leaflet is narrower than long
LEAFLET: medium waviness of margin, shallow to medium depth of veins, medium to glossy upper side, pubescence on blade at apical rosette

PEDUNCLE: absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration
INFLORESCENCE: medium frequency per plant, medium to large
FLOWER BUD: low extent of anthocyanin colouration
COROLLA: medium to large
COROLLA (INNER SIDE): medium extent of anthocyanin colouration, absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or low proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration

TUBER: oval, light yellow flesh
TUBER EYE: shallow depth, yellow at base
TUBER SKIN: yellow, develops weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration in reaction to light

Origin & Breeding History: 'SF Vario' (experimental designation F 5102) originated from the cross between 'Solist', as the female parent, and 'Romina', as the male parent, conducted at the Saatzucht Firlbeck GmbH & Co. KG breeding station, in Atting-Rinkam, Germany in 2004. In 2005, the true potato seed resulting from the cross was sown in a greenhouse and the resulting seedling tubers field planted in Atting-Rinkam, Germany. One of the progeny, designated as F 5102, was identified in 2006. Selection criteria was based on negative mass selection for agronomic characteristics and disease resistance.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'SF Vario' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the 2018 growing season in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 21 metre long row containing 70 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. The mean difference was significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
