Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Yukon Gold' and 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée'

Summary: The lightsprout of 'AAC Confederation' is broad cylindrical whereas the lightsprout of 'Yukon Gold' is ovoid and that of 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée' is spherical. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration at the base of the lightsprout for 'AAC Confederation' is strong whereas it is of medium intensity for 'Yukon Gold'. At the base of the lightsprout, the proportion of blue is medium on 'AAC Confederation' whereas the proportion of blue is absent or low on the lightsprout for 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée'. The foliage structure of the plants of 'AAC Confederation' is a leaf type (foliage closed, stems not, or hardly visible) whereas 'Yukon Gold' is a stem type (foliage open, stems clearly visible). The plant of 'AAC Confederation' has an semi-upright growth habit while the plant of 'Yukon Gold' has an upright growth habit. The extent of anthocyanin colouration on the stem of 'AAC Confederation' is low whereas it is absent to very low for 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée'. The anthocyanin colouration on the stem of 'AAC Confederation' is located along the entire stem whereas it is halfway up the stem for 'Yukon Gold' and at the base for 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée'. The leaf outline of 'AAC Confederation' is of medium size whereas the leaf outline of 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée' is large. The plants of 'AAC Confederation' are shorter than the plants of 'Yukon Gold'. There is no anthocyanin colouration or proportion of blue in the anthocyanin colouration on the inner side of the corolla for 'AAC Confederation' whereas the intensity of anthocyanin colouration and proportion of blue are medium for 'Yukon Gold'. The tuber of 'AAC Confederation' has a short oval shape whereas it is oval for 'Yukon Gold' and round for 'AAC Canada Gold-Dorée'. The base of the eye of the tubers of 'AAC Confederation' is yellow whereas it is red for 'Yukon Gold'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Confederation' (experimental designations 'F07060' and '15357-25') originated from a controlled cross made in 2002, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, between the selection designated 'F87084', as the female parent, and the variety 'Rochdale Gold-Dorée', as the male parent. In 2006, true potato seed from this cross was sown in a greenhouse, and the resulting seedling tubers were planted in 2007 for evaluation and selection, at the Benton Research Substation of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, in Fredericton. 'AAC Confederation' was selected in 2007 from a single hill trial at the Benton Research Substation for its vine maturity, tuber appearance, shape and size.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'AAC Confederation' was conducted during the 2017 growing season at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Fredericton Research and Development Centre, in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of 2 replicates of 30 plants per replicate for each variety, grown in two 7.5 metre length rows spaced 90 centimetres apart. The plants were spaced 25 centimetres apart within the row. The measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values.
