Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Annabelle'

Summary: The intensity of anthocyanin colouration at the base of the lightsprout of 'Bellanita' is medium whereas it is high for 'Annabelle'. The pubescence of the tip of the lightsprout of 'Bellanita' is sparse whereas it is dense for 'Annabelle'. The location of the anthocyanin colouration on the stem of 'Bellanita' is at the base only whereas it is along the entire stem for 'Annabelle'. The leaves of 'Bellanita' are medium to dark green whereas those of 'Annabelle' are light green. The plants of 'Bellanita' are shorter than those of 'Annabelle'.

Description:

LIGHTSPROUT: small, ovoid shape, few to medium number of root tips, short lateral shoots
LIGHTSPROUT BASE: medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or low proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration, dense pubescence
LIGHTSPROUT TIP: small in relation to base, closed habit, weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, sparse pubescence

PLANT: intermediate to leaf type foliage structure where foliage is half open to closed with stems partly to hardly visible, semi-upright growth habit, matures mid-season

STEM: low extent of anthocyanin colouration located between at the base only

LEAF: medium size outline, openness is intermediate between closed and open, weak presence of secondary leaflets, medium to dark green, absent or very low extent and absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on midrib of upper side, medium frequency of coalescence of terminal and lateral leaflets
SECOND PAIR OF LATERAL LEAFLETS: medium size, narrower than long
LEAFLET: weak waviness of margin, medium depth of veins, medium glossiness of upper side, glabrous blade at apical rosette

INFLORESCENCE: absent or very low frequency per plant, small
PEDUNCLE: absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration
FLOWER BUD: absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration
COROLLA: medium size, absent or very low extent and absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on inner side, absent or low proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration on inner side

TUBER: long, medium to dark yellow flesh
TUBER EYE: shallow, yellow at base
TUBER SKIN: yellow, develops very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration in reaction to light

Origin & Breeding History: 'Bellanita' (experimental designation AR 05-1251) originated from a cross between 'AR 97-1032', as the female parent, and 'AR 97-0942', as the male parent, at Agrico Research B.V. in Bant, Netherlands. From the resulting progeny, 'Bellanita' was selected in 2006 based on negative mass selection for agronomic characteristics and disease resistances.

Tests & Trials: The comparative test and trial for 'Bellanita' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the growing season of 2017 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 21.2 metre long row containing 70 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. The mean difference was significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
