Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Ruffian' and 'CDC Norseman'

Summary: The frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves is medium for 'CDC Arborg' while the frequency is low for 'CDC Norseman'. The flag leaf is wider for 'CDC Arborg' than for 'CDC Norseman'. The plants of 'CDC Arborg' are taller than both the plants of 'CDC Ruffian' and 'CDC Norseman'. The panicle of 'CDC Arborg' is longer than the panicle of both 'CDC Ruffian' and 'CDC Norseman'. The panicle density of 'CDC Arborg' is lax whereas it is medium to dense for 'CDC Ruffian' and of medium density for 'CDC Norseman'. The lower glume is longer for 'CDC Arborg' than for 'CDC Ruffian'. The lemma for 'CDC Arborg' has a strong tendency to be awned while the tendency is absent or very weak to weak for 'CDC Ruffian'. The kernel of 'CDC Arborg' is shorter than the kernel of both 'CDC Ruffian' and 'CDC Norseman' and wider than the kernel of 'CDC Norseman'.

Description:

PLANT: spring hulled type, semi-erect juvenile growth habit, absent to very sparse pubescence on lower leaf sheath and blade, medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaf, sensitive to day length

STEM: absent to very sparse pubescence above and below the upper culm node

LEAF: medium to dark green, absent to very sparse pubescence of margin, weak to medium glaucosity at booting

PANICLE: equilateral/symmetrical orientation of branches, lax density, semi-erect to horizontal attitude of branches, 30 to 45 degree angle between dominant side branch and rachis, few short hairs or spines on lowest node
GLUME: weak glaucosity
SPIKELET: fracture type separation, nodding attitude, 2 to 3 grains
RACHILLA: medium length between primary and secondary floret, long grooves, very sparse pubescence
LEMMA: weak to medium glaucosity, medium extent of lateral overlap on palea, white at maturity, absent to very sparse pubescence on lateral and dorsal surface, strong tendency to be awned

KERNEL: short basal hairs present, cream coloured
GROAT: dense pubescence
SCUTELLUM: pointed tip, medium size

AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: good to very good resistance to lodging
DISEASE REACTIONS: resistant to Oat smut (Ustilago avenae)

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Arborg' (experimental designations OT3085 & SA112243) arose from the cross between 'SA050479' and 'OT595' conducted at the Crop Developement Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2008. The F1 and F2 generation were grown in a bulk population beginning in the winter of 2008/09 with subsequent F3 and F4 generations being grown as single seed derived lines in the greenhouse in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The F5 generation was grown as panicle hill plots during the summer of 2010. Single panicles were harvested and sent to a nursery in New Zealand during the winter of 2010/2011, harvested as the F6 generation and bulked as line 'SA112243'. 'CDC Arborg' was tested in the Crop Development Centre yield trials in 2011 to 2013 and from 2014 to 2015, it was tested as 'OT3085' in the Western Canadian Oat Cooperative Registration Trials. Selection criteria included Beta-glucan levels, oil content, groat percentage, plumpness, percentage of thin seeds, early maturity, yield potential and lodging resistance.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'CDC Arborg' were conducted during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons at the University of Saskatchewan, Crop Development Centre, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The plots consisted of 4 replicates per variety for the 2016 growing season and 3 replicates per variety for the 2017 growing season. The plots consisted of 5 rows measuring 3.7 metres long with a row spacing of 0.2 metres. For the measured characteristics, a minimum of 20 measurements were taken in each year of test. The mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired student's T-test.
