Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Sun-Asaro' (Lofos Great Cascade Wine Red)

Summary: The plants of 'Sunlorose' have a smaller leaf blade and a smaller corolla diameter with a shorter corolla tube than the plants of 'Sun-Asaro'. On the middle third of an actively growing stem, the intensity of anthocyanin colouration is absent or very weak for 'Sunlorose' while the intensity of anthocyanin for 'Sun-Asaro' is medium. The base of the leaf blade of 'Sunlorose' is partly overlapping whereas the base of 'Sun-Asaro' is open. The number of incisions of the margin of the leaf blade is medium for 'Sunlorose' while the number of incisions for 'Sun-Asaro' is many. Anthocyanin colouration of the calyx is absent for 'Sunlorose' whereas anthocyanin colouration of the calyx of 'Sun-Asaro' is present and of weak intensity on the dorsal surface only. The sepal of 'Sunlorose' is shorter than the sepal of 'Sun-Asaro'. The main colour of the outer side on the dorsal surface of the corolla tube is purple for 'Sunlorose' while the dorsal surface of the corolla tube of 'Sun-Asaro' is also purple, but redder. The style of 'Sunlorose' is shorter than the style of 'Sun-Asaro'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Sunlorose' originated from a cross pollination conducted in June 2009 at the Omi R&D Center of Suntory Flowers Ltd., located in Higashiomi-shi, Shiga, Japan. The cross involved the two proprietary Asarina hybrid selections 'LP133-1' as the female parent and 'LP115-1' as the male parent. In November 2010, one seedling was selected for its plant growth habit, flower size and flower colour. This selected plant was propagated by cuttings and grown in pots in order to examine its botanical characteristics from April to October 2011. Once it was concluded that this plant was distinguishable from other varieties, uniform and stable in its characteristics, it was named 'Sunlorose'.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial of 'Sunlorose' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2014 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. It included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 5 hanging baskets which were 30.5 cm in diameter on April 25, 2014. Each basket contained 4 cuttings. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of each variety on June 5, 2014. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
