Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Carita Cascade Deep Purple'

Summary: The leaf of 'ANCASBLU' is wider than that of 'Carita Cascade Deep Purple'. The flower of 'ANCASBLU' is larger than that of 'Carita Cascade Deep Purple'. The corolla lobes of the flower of 'ANCASBLU' have medium to strong reflexing while those of 'Carita Cascade Deep Purple' have absent to medium reflexing. The inner side of the upper and lower lip of the corolla of 'ANCASBLU' are violet while those of 'Carita Cascade Deep Purple' are dark violet. The flower chamber of 'ANCASBLU' has dense markings, and is larger than that of 'Carita Cascade Deep Purple', which has medium density markings.

SHOOT: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration below inflorescence

LEAF (UPPER SIDE): medium to dark green, strong glossiness

COROLLA: medium to strong reflexing of lobes, no stripes
UPPER LIP OF COROLLA: violet (RHS N82A) on inner side
LOWER LIP OF COROLLA: violet (RHS N82A) on inner side, absent or very weak undulation of margin
COROLLA CHAMBER: broader than long, medium intensity of purple red markings on inner side, markings on inner side are dense
COROLLA POUCH: violet with white tones on inner side
NECTARY BULGE: violet

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'ANCASBLU' originated from a cross conducted by the breeder Elke Steffen in Dresden, Germany during the summer of 2011. Both the female and male parents used to conduct the cross were unknown proprietary seedlings. 'ANCASBLU' was selected in the summer of 2012 based on plant growth habit, performance in hanging baskets and flower colour. Asexual reproduction of 'ANCASBLU' was first conducted by cuttings in the summer of 2012 in Dresden, Germany.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'ANCASBLU' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring and summer of 2019 at Bioflora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15cm pots on April 12, 2019. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 24, 2019. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
