Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Zanair'

Summary: 'Zalsamay' differs from the reference variety, 'Zanair' in depth of emargination at the apex of the outer lateral tepal and size and colour of the zone of the secondary colour of the inner side of the outer lateral tepal. The emargination of the apex of the outer lateral tepal of 'Zalsamay' is deep whereas it is very deep in 'Zanair'. The zone of the secondary colour of the outer lateral tepal of 'Zalsamay' is small to medium in size and darker purple whereas the zone is large in 'Zanair' and more red-purple.

Description:

'Zalsamay' is a cut flower alstroemeria. The stems are medium in thickness and foliage density is medium to dense. The leaves are elliptic in shape and straight along the longitudinal axis of the blade.

The inflorescence has no anthocyanin colouration on the branches of the umbel. The floret is white and purple. The floret is medium to large in size with a medium to large tepal spread. The outer tepal is obovate with deep emargination at the apex. The outer tepal is white with a small to medium size purple zone in the center. The outer tepal has no stripes on the inner side. The inner lateral tepal is obovate in shape with a small, yellow zone in the middle of the tepal. The inner lateral tepal is white with purple secondary colour in the middle. The inner lateral tepal has medium to many stripes which are small to medium in size. The main colour of the filament is pale purple. The anthers are blue after dehiscence.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Zalsamay' originated by crossing 95115-3PN with 93077-3PN, made in Rijsenhout, the Netherlands in 1997. Selection criteria included flower colour and form.

Tests & Trials: 'Zalsamay' was tested in Langley, British Columbia in the fall of 2003. The trials included ten plants of the candidate and reference varieties. Plants were started from rhizomes and grown in 25cm pots. Measured characteristics were based on ten measurements and colour determinations were made using the 2001 RHS Colour chart.
