Description of infographic: What you need to know if you plan to travel with a pig and return to Canada

Know before you go: let's talk about pigs.

All varieties of pigs, whether kept as pets, companion animals or farm animals, are susceptible to the same serious diseases.

Because of the severity of both the risk and the effects of these diseases, all pigs, regardless of type or where they live, must meet the CFIA's import conditions for breeding pigs, including testing and quarantine when returning to Canada after travelling.

How to plan ahead

Do I need paperwork before I travel?

Pig owners should consult the Automated Import Reference System (AIRS) or contact the nearest CFIA Animal Health District Office before travelling with their animals to ensure they comply with Canada's import requirements when they return and know the risks of animal diseases in other countries.

What are the risks if I plan to travel to the United States or other countries?

United States

Risks: Importation of diseases that are not present in Canada such as brucellosis and pseudorabies.

Other countries

Risks: Importation of diseases that are not present in Canada such as classical swine fever, African swine fever, foot and mouth disease, swine vesicular disease, brucellosis and pseudorabies.

What happens upon return to Canada?

Pigs entering Canada from the U.S. are tested for brucellosis and pseudorabies while in post import quarantine.

Quarantine is a minimum of 30 days and is lifted when both tests are negative and the pig remains healthy.
