Infographic: How Canada's veterinary services measure up in the world

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) asked the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH; founded as Office International des Épizooties (OIE)) to evaluate Canada's veterinary services against international standards, in order to further strengthen veterinary services across the country.

Canada is recognized as a top-performing country for its veterinary services and a leading example in meeting international standards, according to a comprehensive evaluation by the WOAH.

Site visits

4 independent WOAH-certified evaluators conducted site visits in 8 provinces, including British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

How did we do

Out of 45 criteria that were assessed by the WOAH, Canada scored:

• 78% received a rating of 5 out of 5
• 11% received a rating of 4 out of 5
• 11% received a rating of 3 out of 5

Partners involved

The evaluation involved federal, provincial and territorial governments and representatives from the private veterinary sector, academia and veterinary regulators.

WOAH evaluated Canada's veterinary resources, technical authority and capacity, interaction with interested parties and access to markets.
