Panama - Export requirements for meat and poultry products

Eligible products

Formal approval by Panama for Canadian meat products is limited to beef and pork products.

2. Pre-export approvals by competent authority of importing country

In order to avoid unnecessary delays at the border or possibly refusals, exporters should confirm, prior to export, that Canadian beef or pork establishments appear in the list of approved establishments published by the Panama authorities.

In case establishment name and number does not appear in the list of approved establishments published by Panama authorities, the operators are required to contact local CFIA staff for addition of their name and number to the Panama list.

3. Products specifications, production controls and inspection requirements

There are no product specifications, production controls and inspection requirements at this time.

4. Labelling, marking and packaging requirements

The production date must appear on the label of shipping containers.

5. Documentation requirements

Form CFIA/ACIA 1454 can be presented to the competent authorities as a Certificate of Free Sale.

Transport containers should be sealed with an official seal. The seal number must appear on the export certificate.

6. Other information

Panamanian authorities recommend that safe – handling instructions or cooking instructions be placed on the label of raw meat products. The exporter should contact the authorities for details.

Panamanian authorities have indicated that shipments of meat products imported into Panama are subject to bacteriological testing for pathogens such as E. coli O157: H7, Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes as part of routine import control procedures
