Nutrient Content Claims on Foods Intended Solely for Children Under Two Years of Age

Important Notice

On December 14, 2016, amendments to nutrition labelling, list of ingredients and food colour requirements of the Food and Drug Regulations came into force. Regulated parties have a five (5) year transition period to meet the new labelling requirements.

Consult the Former – Nutrient Content Claims on Foods Intended Solely for Children Under Two Years of Age for information on the former requirements.

The tables in the Specific Nutrient Content Claim Requirements section include the claims that are permitted for foods intended solely for children under two years of age. These claims are [B.01.503(2), FDR]:

  • "source of protein";
  • "excellent source of protein";
  • "more protein";
  • "no added sodium" (or salt); and
  • "no added sugars".

Vitamin and mineral nutrient content claims are permitted for foods intended solely for children under two, provided the foods meets the applicable criteria based upon the Daily Values for that age group [D.01.004, D.02.002, FDR].

A claim that characterizes the amount of starch in a food (e.g., "contains no starch"), is permitted on a food intended solely for children under two [B.01.502(2)(g), FDR]. However, when a representation of the amount of starch is made on a label or in an advertisement, the amount of starch, in grams per serving of stated size, is required in the Nutrition Facts table [B.01.402(4), FDR].
