One of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's (CFIA) top priorities is to protect consumers by safeguarding Canada's food supply. The Agency verifies that industry is meeting federal food safety requirements and conducts sampling and testing to detect food safety risks.
Monitoring the levels of chemical and microbiological hazards, undeclared allergens and gluten in the food supply helps CFIA identify food safety hazards and develop risk management strategies to minimize potential risks to Canadians.
When non-compliance is found, CFIA takes appropriate action. These actions may include notifying the manufacturer or importer, requesting a corrective action, additional inspections, conducting further directed sampling or product seizure and/or recall.
Chemical Residue Reports
A targeted survey analyzed levels of aflatoxins in 904 samples of selected corn products, nuts, nut products, raisins, cocoa powder, chili powder and paprika. Detectable levels of aflatoxins were found in 17% of samples tested. It was determined that levels found in this survey were considered safe for consumption. No product recalls were required.
A targeted survey tested 1,355 samples of beverages for pesticides and metals. Samples included domestic and imported coffee, juice, tea, water, other shelf-stable beverages, wine and beer. Pesticide residues were detected in 63% of the samples and 71% of the samples contained some level of metals. Beverages are products of agricultural commodities and may contain pesticide residues introduced from the environment or if the crops were treated with pesticides. Beverages can contain metals as a result of their natural presence in the environment. CFIA conducted appropriate follow-up activities which included additional testing of similar products in subsequent years and working with relevant companies to improve compliance. It was determined that levels found in this survey were considered safe for consumption. No product recalls were required.
A targeted survey analyzed 199 samples of candy for undeclared allergens. Samples included domestic and imported hard (mints, lollypops, etc.) and soft (jelly beans, gummies, etc.) candies. Allergens analyzed included egg, gluten and soy. None of the samples were found to contain any of the undeclared allergens.
