Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Unity' and 'AAC Jatharia'

Summary: The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile of 'AAC Warman' is absent or very weak whereas it is weak for 'Unity'. The flag leaf of 'AAC Warman' is longer than that of 'Unity'. The glaucosity of the culm of 'AAC Warman' is strong whereas it is weak to medium for 'Unity' and 'AAC Jatharia'. The shape of the beak of the lower glume is slightly curved whereas it is moderately to strongly curved for 'AAC Jatharia'. The kernel of 'AAC Warman' is dark red whereas it is medium red for the reference varieties.

Description:

PLANT: common hard red spring type, intermediate growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, heads mid-season

SEEDLING (4 leaf stage): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium to strong glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM NECK: strong glaucosity, slightly curved
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin pith in cross-section

SPIKE: medium glaucosity at heading, parallel sided in profile, medium density, yellow at maturity, erect attitude, absent or very sparse hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: shorter than to equal to spike length, light brown
LOWER GLUME: medium length and width, glabrous, medium extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow, slightly sloping to straight shape
LOWER GLUME BEAK: medium length, slightly curved shape
LOWEST LEMMA: very slightly curved shape

Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Warman' (experimental designation 'BW1025') originated from the cross between 'BB07A*A637' and 'Kane' conducted at the Cereal Research Centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in 2007. In 2007, F1 plants were grown in short rows near Leeston, New Zealand. In 2008, F2 plots were grown near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba and 200 spikes were harvested for sprout testing. F3 lines were increased in growth cabinets and subsequent F4 short rows were grown in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba where selections were based on agronomic characteristics, resistance to rust and common bunt and quality traits. Select F4 rows were harvested and increased as F5 rows in an off-season nursery near Palmerston North, New Zealand during the winter of 2009-2010. In 2010, the F6 lines were tested in single replicate yield tests in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba and spikes were collected from the yield plots and increased as F7 rows in 2010-2011 at an off-season nursery near Palmerston North, New Zealand. The F8 was evaluated at two locations in western Canada. In 2012 and 2013, the line was advanced to the Central Bread Wheat 'A' and 'B' tests, respectively, where the line was evaluated at various locations throughout western Canada. In 2014-16, it was tested in the Central Bread Wheat 'C' registration tests as 'BW1025'.

Tests & Trials: The comparative tests and trials for 'AAC Warman' were conducted during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Saskatoon Research and Development Centre, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Plots consisted of three replications organized in a RCB design with each plot consisting of 4 rows per replicate with a row length of 3.35 m and a row spacing of 18 cm. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
