Variety used for comparison: 'McKenzie'
Summary: The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile of 'SY479' is strong whereas it is medium for 'McKenzie'. At tillering, the growth habit of the plants of 'SY479' is intermediate to semi-prostrate whereas it is erect to semi-erect for 'McKenzie'. The flag leaves of 'SY479' are longer and wider than those of 'McKenzie'. 'SY479' is later heading than 'McKenzie'. At maturity, the spike attitude of 'SY479' is erect whereas that of 'McKenzie' is inclined to nodding. The brush hairs on the kernel of 'SY479' are short whereas they are medium to long on 'McKenzie'. The kernel shape of 'SY479' is broad elliptical whereas that of 'McKenzie' is elliptical.
PLANT: hard red spring type, intermediate to semi-prostrate growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, matures mid-season
SEEDLING (4 leaf stage): strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of the lower leaves
FLAG LEAF: medium to high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the auricles, medium to strong glaucosity of the sheath, glabrous blade and sheath
CULM NECK: medium glaucosity, curvature absent
STRAW: medium thickness of pith in cross-section at maturity, no anthocyanin colouration
SPIKE: medium glaucosity at heading, tapering shape in profile, medium to dense density, erect attitude, light brown at maturity, medium density of hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: light brown, equal in length to length of the spike
LOWER GLUME: short to medium length, medium width, glabrous, sparse extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow to medium width, slightly sloping to partially elevated shape
LOWER GLUME BEAK: short to medium length, straight to very slightly curved
LOWEST LEMMA: slightly curved beak
KERNEL: medium red colour, medium size, short to medium length, medium width, broad elliptical shape, rounded cheek shape, short brush hairs, narrow to medium width of crease, shallow depth of crease
GERM: medium size, round shape
Origin & Breeding History: 'SY479' (experimental designation '06S2164-4' and 'BW479') originated from the cross '01S2004-2-13' / 'Glenn', made in Berthoud, Colorado, USA in 2006. In 2007, individual head selections were taken from an F2 population screened for height, maturity and disease resistance at the Syngenta Canada, Inc. breeding nursery in Rosebank, Manitoba. Single seed descent technique was used to advance these selections through F3 and F4 generations in the greenhouse and in the summer of 2008, F5 head-rows were individually bulked. In 2009, the individual bulks in the F6 generation were entered into preliminary yield trials conducted in a two location observation nursery in Rosebank and Souris, Manitoba. One of the bulk selections was designated '06S2164-4' and tested in research plots in 2010. During the 2011 to 2013 growing seasons, it was tested as 'BW479' in the Central Bread Wheat Cooperative trials.
Tests & Trials: The trials for 'SY479' were conducted in Rosebank, Manitoba during the summers of 2013 and 2014. Plots consisted of 7 rows spaced 18 cm apart. The plot size was approximately 1.2 metres wide by 3.0 metres in length, containing 2400 plants per plot. There were 3 replications arranged in a RCB design. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year.
