Variety used for comparison: 'Wave'
Summary: The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile is weak to medium for 'Emperor' whereas it is absent to very weak for 'Wave'. The plants of 'Emperor' are taller than those of 'Wave'. 'Emperor' has a larger flag leaf than 'Wave'. The lower glume of 'Emperor' is pubescent with a straight beak shape whereas the lower glume of 'Wave' is glabrous with a slightly curved beak shape.
PLANT: common soft red winter type, intermediate growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage
SEEDLING (4 leaf stage): weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves
FLAG LEAF: low frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath
CULM NECK: medium glaucosity, straight
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin pith in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration
SPIKE: medium glaucosity at heading, tapering shape in profile, medium to dense, erect attitude, white at maturity, sparse hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNLETS: light brown, shorter than length of spike
LOWER GLUME: medium length, narrow to medium width, glabrous
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow to medium width, slightly sloping
LOWER GLUME BEAK: short, straight
KERNEL: light red, small to medium size, medium length, narrow to medium width, oval shape, rounded cheek shape, medium to long brush hairs, narrow and medium depth of crease
GERM: medium size, broad elliptical
AGRONOMICS: fair to good winter survival
PASTRY AND BISCUIT QUALITY: good
Origin & Breeding History: 'Emperor' (experimental name SC093010R) originated from the cross T814/Cardinal//Auburn/OH413. The original cross was made at Battle Ground, Indiana in 1997. The breeding method was Modified Bulk selection where selections were made for agronomic characteristics and disease resistance from 1998 to 2008. Breeder seed was bulked from F11 seed.
Tests & Trials: The comparitive tests and trials for 'Emperor' were conducted during the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons at C&M Seeds, Palmerston, Ontario. Plots consisted of 8 rows with a row length of 4 m and a row spacing of 15 cm with 1600 plants per plot. Measured characteristics were based on measurements taken from 20 plants or parts of plants, resulting in a total of 40 measurements over 2 years. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
