Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: '900Y71' and 'Astro R2'

Summary: When 95% of the pods are ripe, the plants of 'P008T22R2' are taller than those of '900Y71'. The seed shape of 'P008T22R2' is elongated whereas it is spherical flattened for both reference varieties. The hilum of 'P008T22R2' is black whereas it is imperfect yellow for '900Y71'. 'P008T22R2' is later maturing than '900Y71'.

HYPOCOTYL: medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration

PLANT: oilseed type, indeterminate growth type, erect to semi-erect growth habit, tawny pubescence on middle third of main stem, flowers and matures early

LEAF: pointed ovate shape of lateral leaflet, medium size, medium green

FLOWER: violet

POD: medium intensity of brown colour
SEED: medium size, elongated shape, yellow ground colour of testa
HILUM: black, normal abcission layer

Origin & Breeding History: 'P008T22R2' (experimental designation XB007G13) is the result of a cross conducted in 2006 near Glyndon, Minnesota, U.S.A. Bulk and single plant selection methods were used in developing the variety. It was evaluated in yield test nurseries from 2005 to 2009. Contra season nurseries in Kihei, Hawaii and Rancagua, Chile were used to advance the development of the variety. In 2009, the selection, XB007G13, was selected for general plant health, resistance to lodging, early emergence and general disease resistance.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted near Alma, Ontario during the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons. The plots consisted of 3 replicates per variety containing 2 rows per replicate with a row length of 4.11 metres and a row spacing of 76 cm. Measured characteristics were based on 30 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values.
