Origin & Breeding History: 'NPCW12197' was bred and developed by Guido von Tubeuf of Stuttgart, Germany. It originated from a controlled pollination conducted in November/December 2006, in Nairobi, Kenya, between the proprietary seedling designated 'R 1523', as the female parent, and the proprietary seedling designated 'U 006', as the male parent. From the resulting progeny, seedlings were selected in October 2007, in Stuttgart, for their bract and foliage quality, and flower colour. These seedlings were evaluated in greenhouse trials from August to December, from 2008 to 2012, in Stuttgart. In December 2010, 'NPCW12197' was selected for commercialization.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'NPCW12197' was conducted in a greenhouse in St. Catharines, Ontario, in December 2015. The trial included 25 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings that were each transplanted into a 15 cm pot on July 23, 2015. The pots were spaced 30 cm apart from the centre of the pots. The observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on December 1, 2015. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
