Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Freedom Red'

Summary: The plants of 'PER1902' are taller than those of 'Freedom Red'. There is very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the stems of 'PER1902' whereas 'Freedom Red' has weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The petioles of 'PER1902' are shorter than those of 'Freedom Red'. The bracts of 'PER1902' are slightly darker red than those of 'Freedom Red'. The bracts of 'PER1902' are shorter than those of 'Freedom Red'. The cyme of 'PER1902' is narrower than that of 'Freedom Red'. The time of opening of the first three cyathia of 'PER1902' is late whereas it is early in 'Freedom Red

Description:

'PER1902' is an early season poinsettia variety with very weak anthocyanin colouration on the stem. The leaves are broad ovate in shape and have a rounded base with no anthocyanin colouration on the upper and lower sides. There is no anthocyanin on the veins of the upper side and very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the lower side. There is medium lobe development on the leaf blades with pointed sinuses between the lobes and no incisions of the margins. The petiole has strong anthocyanin colouration on the upper side and medium anthocyanin on the lower side.

The bracts of 'PER1902' are red and develop their colour early in the season. There is weak to medium lobe development, with rounded sinuses between the lobes and no incisions of the margin. The variety has no folding of the bracts with curving or twisting present. The intensity of rugosity between the veins is weak. 'PER1902' has ovate shaped bracts with a rounded to wedge-shaped base. The glands of the cyathium are greenish yellow and medium in size, with medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the margins of the glands. Opening of the first three cyathia is late.

Origin & Breeding History: 'PER1902' was discovered at the Paul Ecke Ranch in Encinitas, California in November, 2001.The variety was selected for its early bloom date, dark red bract colour and dark green leaf colour.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'PER1902' were conducted in a greenhouse during the late fall of 2004 in Grimsby, Ontario. The trial consisted of 15 plants per variety grown in 15 cm pots, spaced approximately 0.40 metre apart on the bench. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety. All colour determinations were made using the RHS Colour Chart 1995.
