Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Sunsurfmicshipho' originated from a cross between the variety 'Fantasy Pink' as the female parent and the variety 'P01-531' as the male parent. The cross was conducted in June 2002, at Higashiomi-shi, Shiga-ken, Japan. In April 2003, 80 seedlings were obtained from the cross. The seedlings were grown in pots in a glasshouse and evaluated. In August 2003, one seedling was selected for its growth habit. The selected plant was propagated by cuttings and grown in pots, and then evaluated in a trial from April to September 2004. The plants were found to be distinct, uniform and stable in their characteristics and the new variety was named 'Sunsurfmicshipho'.
Tests & Trials: The trials for 'Sunsurfmicshipho' were conducted during the spring of 2007, in a polyhouse in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trials consisted of a total of 15 plants of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings planted into 15cm pots on April 24, 2007. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on June 5, 2007. All colour measurements were made using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour chart.
