Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Kerpril' and 'Condopinkveined'

Summary: 'Kirimaji Double Blue Vein' has a semi erect to horizontal growth habit while 'Condopinkveined' has a horizontal to semi drooping growth habit. The shoot length is shorter in 'Kirimaji Double Blue Vein' than in the reference varieties. 'Kirimaji Double Blue Vein' has longer petioles than the reference varieties. The pedicel in 'Kirimaji Double Blue Vein' is longer than in 'Condopinkveined'. The undulation of the margin of the corolla lobe is stronger in 'Kirimaji Double Blue Vein' than in 'Condopinkveined'. 'Kirimaji Double Blue Vein' has a wider corolla tube than the reference varieties. The flower colour of 'Kirimaji Double Blue Vein' is a light blue violet while 'Condopinkveined' is a few shades lighter blue violet and 'Kerpril' is a violet colour.


'Kirimaji Double Blue Vein' is a double petunia variety which has both a semi-erect to horizontal growth habit, with short to medium plant height. The shoots are thin to medium in thickness with medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The shape of the leaf is elliptic to ovate with a broad obtuse shaped apex. The upper side of the leaf blade is medium green in colour with blistering present and no variegation. There is a petiole present.

The sepals of 'Kirimaji Double Blue Vein' are linear in shape with anthocyanin colouration present. The pedicel is short to medium in length, and thin to medium in width. The overall flower shape is funnelform. The margin of the corolla has strong undulation. 'Kirimaji Double Blue Vein' produces light blue violet coloured flowers. The prominence of the veins on the inner side of the corolla lobe and corolla tube is strong to very strong. The corolla tube length is very short in length, and medium in width. The corolla tube is a violet colour on the inner side. The anthers are a blue colour.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Kirimaji Double Blue Vein' is the product of a controlled breeding program in Tochigi, Japan during June of 2000. The female parent was the petunia 'Kirimaji Double Pink Vein', while the male parent was petunia 'Sufinia Super Double Vein'. Initial selection was made in 2000.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Kirimaji Double Blue Vein' were conducted in a polyhouse at BioFlora Inc., St. Thomas, Ontario during the fall of 2002. The trials included 15 plants of each variety. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 10 cm pots on September 6, 2002. All colour measurements were made using RHS colour chart 2001. Unless otherwise indicated measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
