Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Dandbwhitelist' and 'Condowhite'

Summary: 'Kirimaji Double White' has a more drooping growth habit than 'Dandbwhitelist'. 'Kirimaji Double White' produces a wider plant than 'Condowhite'. The petiole of 'Kirimaji Double White' is longer than 'Dandbwhitelist'. 'Kirimaji Double White' has smaller sepals than 'Condowhite'. The diameter of the corolla is smaller in 'Kirimaji Double White' than in 'Condowhite'. 'Kirimaji Double White' has a weaker undulation of the corolla lobe than the reference varieties. 'Kirimaji Double White' has a smaller corolla tube than 'Condowhite'. The flower colour of 'Kirimaji Double White' is white while 'Dandbwhitelist' appears to have a very pale violet coloured flower as a result of the purple veins.

Description:

'Kirimaji Double White' is a double petunia variety which has semi drooping to drooping growth habit, and short plant height. The shoots are medium in thickness with no anthocyanin colouration. The shape of the leaf is elliptic to ovate with a narrow obtuse shaped apex. The upper side of the leaf blade is medium green in colour with no variegation. There is a petiole present.

The sepals of 'Kirimaji Double White' are linear and obovate in shape with no anthocyanin colouration . The overall flower shape is funnelform . The pedicel is short and thin to medium in width. The margin of the corolla has weak to medium undulation at the outer edges but strong undulation at the center. 'Kirimaji Double White' produces white flowers with the occasional pink splotch. The prominence of the veins on the inner side of the corolla lobe is very weak. The prominence of the veins on the inner side of the corolla tube is weak to medium. The corolla tube is very short in length, and narrow to medium in width. The corolla tube is white to light yellow in colour on the inner side with greenish purple veins. The anthers are cream coloured.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Kirimaji Double White' is the product of a controlled breeding program in Tochigi, Japan during 1999. The female parent was an unnamed internal breeding seed line of Petunia hybrida, while the male parent was petunia 'Double Cascade Pink'. Initial selection was made in 2000.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Kirimaji Double White' were conducted in a polyhouse at BioFlora Inc., St. Thomas, Ontario during the fall of 2002. The trials included 15 plants of each variety. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 10 cm pots on August 16, 2002. All colour measurements were made using RHS colour chart 2001. Unless otherwise indicated measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
