Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Osjotis' (Soprano Light Purple) and 'Aksinto' (Cape Daisy Kalanga)

Summary: 'Oste Lightpur' is an osteospermum variety that flowers earlier than'Aksinto'. 'Oste Lightpur' also has longer and wider ray florets than 'Aksinto'. The ray florets of the candidate are similar in length but wider than those of 'Osjotis'. The main colour of the upper side of the ray florets of 'Oste Lightpur' differs slightly from that of the two reference varieties. 'Oste Lightpur' and 'Aksinto' both have a purple disc, whereas 'Osjotis' has a blue disc.

Description:

'Oste Lightpur' is an osteospermum variety which has erect shoots and dark green leaves with no variegation and weak lobing. The inflorescences have one or two complete whorls of ray florets and incomplete ray florets whorls are also present. The ray florets are oblanceolate and light purple in colour. The lower side of the ray floret is yellow-green with light purple streaks. The disc is purple.

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Oste Lightpur' originated in a planned pedigree breeding program in Andjik, The Netherlands. The variety resulted from a cross made in October, 2000. The resultant seed was sown in a greenhouse in June 2001. In October 2001, a single plant was selected by the breeder from the progeny, based on flower colour, form and plant habit.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Oste Lightpur' were conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2005 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trials included 15 plants of each of the candidate and reference varieties. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 6 inch pots on March 21, 2005. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on May 19, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the RHS Colour Chart 2001.
