Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'SW Betania' and 'Triactor'

Summary: The flag leaf of 'CS Camden' is wider than that of 'SW Betania'. The plant height of 'CS Camden' is shorter than that of both reference varieties. The panicle branches of 'CS Camden' have an equilateral/symmetrical orientation whereas those of 'SW Betania' have a unilateral/side orientation. The glaucosity of the glume of 'CS Camden' is strong whereas it is weak for 'SW Betania' and medium for 'Triactor'. The glaucosity of the lemma of 'CS Camden' is absent or very weak whereas it is strong for 'Triactor'. At maturity, the lemma of 'CS Camden' is light brown whereas it is white for 'Triactor'. The shape of the scutellum of 'CS Camden' is pointed whereas it is rounded for 'Triactor'.

Description:

PLANT: intermediate juvenile growth habit, absent to very sparse pubescence on lower leaf sheath and lower leaf blade, high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves
STEM: absent or very sparse density of pubescence above and below the upper culm node

LEAF: dark green, absent to very sparse pubescence of margin, medium glaucosity

PANICLE: equilateral/symmetrical orientation, medium density, semi-erect to horizontal attitude of branches, more than 45 degree angle between dominant side branch and rachis, very few and very short hairs or spines on lowest node
SPIKELET: fracture separation, nodding attitude, 2 grains
RACHILLA: short between primary and secondary floret, short to medium length of groove, glabrous
GLUME: strong glaucosity
LEMMA: very weak glaucosity, medium extent of lateral overlap on palea, light brown at maturity, absent to very sparse density of pubescence on lateral and dorsal surface, medium tendency to be awned
KERNEL: short basal hairs, white
GROAT: dense pubescence
SCUTELLUM: pointed, small to medium size

AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTIC: very good resistance to lodging

Origin & Breeding History: 'CS Camden' (experimental designation 'OT4001R') originated from the cross 'SW Betania' x 'Dominik' made in Svalöv, Sweden. The final cross was made in 2004 using a modified pedigree method of breeding with the variety originating from a single plant selection from the F4. Early generation selections were made for disease resistance, grain quality and straw strength. Advanced selection criteria included yield, grain quality and other agronomic characteristics. Breeder seed was derived from a single panicle selected in the F7 in 2009. 'OT4001R' was first tested in 2009 by Canterra Seeds at their various test sites throughout Western Canada. Based on evaluations for yield, maturity, straw strength and grain characteristics, 'OT4001R' advanced into the 2010-2011 Western Cooperative Oat Registration Trials.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'CS Camden' were conducted during the 2013 and 2014 growing seasons at Canterra Seeds Research plots near Sperling, Manitoba. A two replicate design was planted using plots measuring approximately 4 metres by 1 metre with 6 rows per plot spaced 20 cm between rows. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year.
