In 1996, seedlings obtained from the cross were grown in pots in a glasshouse and evaluated. Two seedlings were selected based on growth habit and flower size. The selected plants were propagated by cuttings and grown in trials. In October 2000, one plant was chosen and named 'Sunmecareki'.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2007 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 15 plants of each variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on May 8, 2007. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on July 16, 2007. All colour measurements were made using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
