Varieties used for comparison: 'Alice Dupont' (Giant Rose) and 'Sunmandeho' (Sundaville White)
Summary: 'Sunmandecos has a more vigorous thinner vine than 'Alice Dupont'. The stem anthocyanin colouration of 'Sunmandecos' is stronger than 'Sunmandeho' but weaker than 'Alice Dupont'. 'Sunmandecos' has a slightly longer and less rugous leaf than 'Alice Dupont'. The leaf of 'Sunmandecos' has a weaker undulation of the margin than 'Alice Dupont' and 'Sunmandeho'. 'Sunmandecos' has sparser pubescence on the lower side of the leaf than 'Alice Dupont' and 'Sunmandeho'. The flower diameter of 'Sunmandecos' is smaller than 'Alice Dupont' and 'Sunmandeho'. 'Sunmandecos' has a purple-red flower colour with white at the base of the petals while 'Alice Dupont' is a slightly darker purple-red and 'Sunmandeho' is white. The petal margin of 'Sunmandecos' has a stronger undulation than 'Alice Dupont'. 'Sunmandecos' has a smaller flower petal than 'Alice Dupont'.
'Sunmandecos' is a mandevilla variety that grows as a climbing vine. The stem is light green in colour, with medium thickness, weak to medium anthocyanin colouration and dense pubescence. The leaves are arranged in an opposite fashion, are elliptic to oblong in shape with an acuminate to cuspidate apex and obtuse shaped base. There is no variegation on the leaves. The upper side of the leaf is medium green in colour, with very weak undulation of the margin, weak to medium rugosity, medium to strong glossiness and very short moderately dense pubescence. The lower side of the leaf is light green in colour with very short moderately dense pubescence.
'Sunmandecos' produces a racemose type infloresence that is trumpet-shaped with a green and light red coloured pedicel. The flower colour is purple-red with white at the base of the petals. The flower petals strongly overlap, have an entire margin with medium undulation and reflexing. The inner flower tube opening has purple red streaks with yellow at the base. The calyx has weak to medium anthocyanin colouration. The anthers are yellow in colour.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Sunmandecos' originated from crossing Mandevilla amabilis x boliviensis variety 'Sunmandeho', as the female parent and Mandevilla amabilis variety 'Rose Giant', as the male parent, in May/June 1998 at the Omi R & D Centre, Shiga-ken, Japan. In November 1998, 100 seedlings were obtained from that cross and were grown in a greenhouse from March 1999 onwards. One seedling was selected based on its flower colour and flower duration from those seedlings. The seedling was propagated by cuttings and grown in a trial from May to November 2000 where it was evaluated.
Tests & Trials: Trials were conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2005 in St. Thomas, Ontario. Trials included 21 plants of the candidate and reference varieties. Three rooted cuttings were transplanted into 3 gallon containers giving 7 containers per variety with the exception of 'Alice Dupont' with three containers. Observations and measurements were taken from ten plants of each variety. All colour measurements were made using RHS Colour Chart 2001.
