Origin & Breeding History: 'Balwalila' originated from a cross conducted during summer 2002 at Südlohn, Germany as part of a controlled breeding program. The female parent was a proprietary Lobelia breeding selection designated '02P616' characterized by its pink flowers, small, fine and dark green foliage and upright plant growth habit. The male parent was another proprietary Lobelia breeding selection designated '02P508' characterized by its large, intense blue flowers, dark green foliage and upright growth habit. 'Balwalila' was initially selected during spring 2003 based on its flower colour, floriferousnesss and well branched and compact plant growth habit.

Tests & Trials: Trials for 'Balwalila' were conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2008 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 15 plants per variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 11.5 cm pots on March 18, 2008. Measured characteristics were based on measurements taken from 10 plants or parts of plants on May 29, 2008. All colour determinations were made using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
