Origin & Breeding History: 'PIIHM-II' was developed by the breeder, Michael Dirr from Bogart, Georgia, USA, a partner of Plant Productions, Inc. in Watkinsville, Georgia, USA. It originated from an open pollinated cross of Hydrangea macrophylla variety 'PIIHM-I' that occurred in 2008 in Watkinsville, Georgia, USA. The resultant seed was planted in January 2009. 'PIIHM-II' was selected later in 2009 for its plant growth habit, flower characteristics and foliage characteristics. Asexual reproduction of 'PIIHM-II' by softwood cuttings was first conducted in 2009, in Watkinsville, Georgia, USA.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial of 'PIIHM-II' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2014 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. It included a total of 10 shrubs each of the candidate and reference varieties. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 shrubs or parts of shrubs of the candidate variety 'PIIHM-II' and the reference variety 'Robert' on May 27, 2014, and from the reference variety 'PIIHM-I' on May 30, 2014. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
