Summary: The plants of 'CDC 1089' flower later than the plants of 'DL Rico'. The leaflet of 'CDC 1089' is narrower than the leaflet of 'DL Rico'. At the beginning of ripening, the pod of 'CDC 1089' has a semi-erect attitude while the pod of 'DL Rico' has an erect attitude. The pod of 'CDC 1089' is narrower than that of 'DL Rico'. The plants of 'CDC 1089' mature later than the plants of 'DL Rico'. The one hundred dry seed weight of 'CDC 1089' is less than the one hundred dry seed weight of 'DL Rico' and 'Navi' and greater than that of 'CDC 1142'.
Description:
PLANT: indeterminate growth type, flowers mid to late season, matures mid to late season
STEM: medium to many nodes up to and including the first flowering node
FOLIAGE: medium green, maximum width of leaflet positioned at middle
FLOWER: melanin spot absent on wing, no anthocyanin colouration on standard
POD: semi-erect attitude, brown black colour at maturity
SEED: irregular shape in median longitudinal section, grey beige colour of testa immediately after harvest, black pigmentation of hilum absent
Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC 1089' (experimental designation 1089-1-2) originated from a cross conducted at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The initial crosses between 82-112 and 'Fevita' and between 116-33 and 'Fevita' were conducted in 2009. In 2010 the two resulting progeny lines were crossed. A single plant selection was made at the F2 generation. Further selections made at the F3 generation resulted in one line designated as 1089-1-2. Selection criteria was based on vicine and convicine content, yield, seed weight, days to flower, days to maturity, lodging, plant height and disease resistance. Breeder seed was established in 2020 at the F9 generation using 10 sublines.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'CDC 1089' were conducted in 2021 and 2022 at the Sutherland field site of the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The trials were arranged in a RCB design consisting of 3 replications per variety. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows spaced 30 cm apart, with a row length of 3.66 metres and a planting density of 43 seeds per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 60 measurements of each variety per year except for seed weight which was based on 12 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on LSD values.
