The new variety was selected in late 1999 for criteria based on very compact growth habit, good branching and early flowering. Propagation by vegetative cuttings was first conducted in late 1999 in Gensingen, Germany.

Tests & Trials: Trials for 'Lemon Zest' were conducted in a garden plot during the early spring of 2010, in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 10 plants of each variety. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 11 cm pots in the spring of 2009 and then subsequently planted in the garden plot in September 2009. All observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on May 2, 2010. All colour measurements were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society colour chart.
