Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Bluesette'

Summary: 'Gallery Renoir' produces a shorter plant than 'Bluesette'. The leaf type in 'Gallery Renoir' is compound while in 'Bluesette' it is simple. 'Gallery Renoir' has a darker green leaf colour than 'Bluesette'. Anthocyanin colouration is present in the petiole of 'Gallery Renoir' while not in the petiole of 'Bluesette'. 'Gallery Renoir' has a smaller flower diameter than 'Bluesette'. The ray florets are smaller in 'Gallery Renoir' than in 'Bluesette'. 'Gallery Renoir' has a shorter peduncle length from the base of the flower to the top pair of leaves than 'Bluesette'. The number of involucral bracts is fewer in 'Gallery Renoir' than 'Bluesette'.

Description:

'Gallery Renoir' has an upright growth habit. The stem is medium green in colour and has weak anthocyanin present. The stem is straight and has absent or very sparse pubescence. The terminal leaflets are ovate in shape with dentate margins. The leaf has weak glaucosity and no pubescence on the upper surface. The leaves are dark green in colour. The petiole has no wings present and has weak anthocyanin present.

The flowers are a decorative type. They are located above the foliage and are angled less than 30 degrees with the stem. The flowers are pink/red in colour. The ray florets have no markings and pointed tips. There is no disc present. The involucral bracts are elliptic in shape and yellowish to light green in colour.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Gallery Renoir' was a selection made in 1995 from a seedling population that resulted from a cross pollination between Dahlia 'Tout a Toi' as the female parent and the Dahlia 'Oriental Dream' as the male parent. Selection criteria were plant height, early flowering & longevity, plant health, compact branching plants, and vibrant flower colour. It is maintained in the vegetative state, and reproduced by vegetative cuttings in Lisse, The Netherlands.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Gallery Renoir' were conducted in Oxford Station, Ontario during the summer of 2002. The trials consisted of ten plants per variety grown in 15 cm pots under partial shade conditions. Measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
