Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'FBLL'

Summary: The plants of 'I294213' are taller than those of 'FBLL'. The height of principal ear insertion is lower in 'I294213' than it is in 'FBLL'. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration at the tips of the glume of 'I294213' is absent or very weak whereas it is medium in intensity in 'FBLL'. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the glume body of 'I294213' is absent or very weak whereas it is weak in intensity in 'FBLL'. The silks of 'I294213' are pink 2-3 days after emergence whereas they are green in 'FBLL'.

Description:

'I294213' is an inbred corn variety. At inflorescence emergence, the angle of the leaf with the stalk is semi-erect (30-40). After male flowering, the leaf blade is medium in width with no anthocyanin colouration of the sheath. There are a medium number of leaves per stem (14-16) with no anthocyanin colouration of the stem nodes and internodes.

Tassel emergence and male flowering is mid-season for 'I294213'. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the ring at the base of the glumes, at the tips and on the bodies of the glumes is absent or very weak. There is weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the anthers. At the end of male flowering, the main axis above the lowest side branch and above the upper side branch is long. The density of branches on the main axis of the tassel is intermediate. There are few (3-10) erect to semi-erect lateral branches with a small angle (less than 30) between the main axis and lateral branches.

Anthocyanin colouration of the silks is absent or very weak one to two days after emergence and pink, two to three days after emergence. The shank or peduncle is short. There is a low percentage of plants with ear wings. The ear of 'I294213' is conical in shape with a small to medium diameter in the middle-third of the ear including and excluding kernels. There are many rows of kernels (15-16). Anthocyanin colouration of cob glumes is present. The kidney-shaped kernels of 'I294213' are a flint/dent type (50/50%) and yellow-orange in colour on the dorsal side. The kernel tip is yellow.

Origin & Breeding History: 'I294213' was derived from the cross of the inbred lines '01DHD10' and '90DJD28' made in the summer of 1996. Seed was grown ear-to-row from 1998 to 2000. In the summer of 1999, corn inbred 'I294213' was coded and reproduced by self-pollination. Selection criteria included increased yield potential, excellent general combining ability, reduced greensnap susceptibility, high seed production yield and good plant type.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'I294213' were conducted at Glanworth, Ontario in 2003 and 2004. The trials consisted of two replicates with two rows per replicate. The rows were 5.5 metres long, spaced 23 cm apart. Final plant population was 46 plants per plot.
