Summary: '3ISI2' has a shorter plant height than 'LH85'. Tassel emergence and male flowering is earlier for '3ISI2'. The ring at the base of the tassel glume and anthers have strong anthocyanin for '3ISI2' while 'LH85' has no anthocyanin. The lateral branches on the tassel have a semi-erect habit for '3ISI2' while 'LH85' has a drooping habit. The silks emerge earlier for '3ISI2'. The cob glumes have no anthocyanin for '3ISI2' while 'LH85' has anthocyanin present. The kernels of '3ISI2' have red-brown dorsal colour while the kernels of 'LH85' have yellow dorsal colour. The kernels of '3ISI2' are dent type while the kernels of 'LH85' are flint/dent (25/75%).
'3ISI2' is an inbred corn variety. At inflorescence emergence, the mature leaf margin has medium pubescence and no anthocyanin colouration. The angle of the leaf with the stalk is semi-erect (30-40). After male flowering, the leaf sheath has no anthocyanin. There are very few leaves per stem (less than 11). The anchor roots have very weak anthocyanin present.
Tassel emergence and male flowering is early for '3ISI2'. There is strong anthocyanin colouration on the ring at the base of the glumes and weak to medium anthocyanin at the tip of the glume. The glume body has weak to medium anthocyanin and the anthers have strong anthocyanin. Male sterility is absent. At the end of male flowering, the length of the main axis above the lowest side branch is long as is the length of the main axis above the upper side branch. Density of branches on the main axis is intermediate. There are few lateral branches (3-10) and the size of the angle between the main axis and the lateral branches is medium (30-60 ). The tassel has semi-erect lateral branches.
Anthocyanin colouration of the silks is very weak, one to two and two to three days after emergence. The shank or peduncle is long in length. At dry husk stage, the ear of '3ISI2' is drooping. The husks are medium in length (husks extend 1/4 length of the ear above the tip). There are a very low number of plants with short ear wings. The ear of '3ISI2' is cylindrical-conical in shape with a medium to large diameter in the middle-third of the ear (including kernels) and a medium diameter (excluding kernels). There is a medium number of rows of kernels (13-14). Anthocyanin colouration of cob glumes is absent. The wedge-shaped kernels of '3ISI2' are dent type and red-brown in colour on the dorsal side. The kernel tip is yellow in colour.
Origin & Breeding History: '3ISI2' was derived from the cross '3IBZ2' and 'IBI52' made in the winter of 1989. Seed was grown ear-to-row from 1990 to 1993. In the summer of 1994, seed from one ear was bulked and named '3ISI2'. Selection criteria included early flowering, better pollen shed and improved smut resistance.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for '3ISI2'were conducted at London, Ontario in 1997 and 1998. The trials consisted of two replicates with two rows per replicate. The rows were 4.5 meters long with approximately 22 plants per row.
