Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Magnus'

Summary: Vintage Wine' has a shorter plant height than 'Magnus'. 'Vintage Wine' has darker purple anthocyanin colouration in the stem than 'Magnus'. 'Vintage Wine' has a smaller flower diameter and shorter, narrower ray florets than 'Magnus'.

Description:

'Vintage Wine' is a vegetatively propagated, perennial coneflower. The growth habit is upright-bushy and there is a medium degree of branching. The stem is dark green in colour with strong purple anthocyanin and very sparse pubescence. The leaves are simple and elliptic to ovate in shape. The apex is acute in shape and the base is cuneate. The leaf blade margin is serrate. The upper side of the leaf blade is dark green in colour and there is no variegation.

'Vintage Wine' begins flowering early in the season and flowers almost continuously over a long period of time. The head type inflorescence is both terminal and axillary in position and has an erect attitude. There are a medium number of ray florets that are straight along the longitudinal axis. The ray florets are purple in colour and the disc is orange to yellow-brown.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Vintage Wine' was selected as a seedling from unknown parentage, by P.H. Oudolf in Hummelo, The Netherlands in 1999. The variety was selected on the basis of its improved flower colour.

Tests & Trials: The test and trial for 'Vintage Wine'was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2005 at Variety Rights Management in Oxford Station, Ontario. The trial included 10 plants of each variety. The plants were grown in 15 cm pots spaced 30 cm apart. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten plant measurements.
