Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Mrs. N. Thompson' and 'Fireworks'

Summary: 'Evithree' is a climbing Clematis variety which has medium wide leaves, whereas the reference variety 'Fireworks' has broad leaves. 'Evithree' has a shorter peduncle than 'Mrs. N. Thompson' and 'Fireworks'. The flowers of 'Fireworks' are larger than those of 'Evithree' and the sepals of 'Fireworks' are significantly longer than the candidate variety. The main colour of the upper and lower side of the sepal of 'Mrs. N. Thompson' is a slightly darker shade of violet than 'Evithree'. The filament of 'Evithree' is white, whereas the filament of both reference varieties is white at the base but violet at the top.

Description:

'Evithree' is a climbing type Clematis variety which has dense pubescence on the young shoots. There are both simple and ternate type leaves on the plants. The blade of the leaf is short to medium in length and medium in width. The leaves are narrowly ovate, with a narrow acute apex and a rounded to cordate base. The leaf blade margins are entire. The leaves of 'Evithree' have two to four lobes and are medium green in colour with weak rugosity. The lower side of the leaves are densely pubescent.

'Evithree' bears solitary, single flowers, which are medium in diameter, rotate in shape and face upwards or outwards. In lateral view, the flowers are flat to convex. There are six sepals, which are free to touching. The flowers of 'Evithree' have a strong fragrance.

'Evithree' has short to medium length sepals which are medium to broad in width and elliptic in shape. In cross-section the sepals are convex. In longitudinal section they are flat to moderately reflexed. The apex is acute with an acuminate tip and the base is type 3. Sepals of 'Evithree' have two colours on the upper side, dark violet as main colour with a red-purple central bar. The lower side of the sepals is a light violet with a white central bar. The margin of the sepals is moderately undulating, and there is no twisting along the longitudinal axis. Flowers of 'Evithree' have no petaloid stamens. 'Evithree' has white filaments with reddish purple anthers and a creamy white stigma.

'Evithree' flowers on both the previous year's and current year's growth. It begins flowering mid-season (about week 25 in St. Thomas, Ontario).

Origin & Breeding History: 'Evithree' originated from a polycross made at the Guernsey Clematis Nursery in the Channel Islands, United Kingdom. The variety was discovered as a seedling in a controlled planting; however, the parents are unknown.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Evithree' were established in the field during the spring of 2002, and observations and measurements were taken during the spring of 2003 at BioFlora, Inc., St. Thomas, Ontario. Eight rooted plants of the candidate and reference varieties were received April 20, 2002 and planted into 11.5cm pots and grown in a polyhouse. Young plants were transplanted to the field on June 3, 2002. Plants were spaced 60cm apart and trained to grow along a trellis. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plant parts of each variety during June 2003. All colour measurements were made using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
