Variety used for comparison: 'Filips Magic Moment'

Summary: The plants of 'SMTOYB' are smaller than the plants of 'Filips Magic Moment'. The plants of 'SMTOYB' are low conical shaped whereas the plants of 'Filips Magic Moment' are loosely conical in shape. 'SMTOYB' has foliage that is medium in density whereas 'Filips Magic Moment' has foliage that is dense. The branch of the first order on 'SMTOYB' is shorter than the branch of the first order on 'Filips Magic Moment'.

Description:

PLANT: evergreen, yellow colour group, low conical shape, medium foliage density, absent or very weak fragrance

BRANCH: very dense, erect attitude, medium to rigid, brown when aged
BRANCHLETS OF FIRST ORDER: stem light brown with absent to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, very dense penultimate branchlets
BRANCHLETS OF SECOND ORDER: sparse to medium density

LEAF: paired and opposite decussate arrangement around axis of branchlet, Scale-like and appressed shape, acute apex, entire margin with flat fold
LEAF UPPER SIDE: yellow orange (RHS 13B) in spring, green brown (RHS 151A) and yellow orange (RHS 13A) with light green (RHS 144B) in summer
LEAF LOWER SIDE: light green (RHS 144B-C) in summer

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'SMTOYB' originated from an open pollinated cross between the seed parent 'Brandon' and unnamed pollen parent in 2003 in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA. 'SMTOYB' was selected in spring 2007 for plant habit, foliage colour, growth rate, and overall hardiness and wind resistance. Asexual reporduction of 'SMTOYB' was first conducted in November 2001 in Grand Haven, Michigan, U.S.A.

Tests & Trials: The comparitive trials for 'SMTOYB' were conducted in an outdoor irrigated container trial during the spring of 2018 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 12 plants of the candidate variety and 8 plants of the reference variety. All plants were grown from bare root plants planted into 1 gallon containers on July 26, 2017. Observations and measurements were taken on August 5, 2018. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart. The mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired student's T-test.
