The leaf margin of 'PA3CN157' is sharp whereas it is rounded for the reference varieties. 'PA3CN157' flowers earlier than 'PPS01-140 A-Line'. The petal of 'PA3CN157' is longer than 'PA1CN131' and it is shorter than '5440'. The petal of 'PA3CN157' is wider than those of 'PA1CN131' and 'PPS01-140 A-Line'. The silique attitude of 'PA3CN157' is horizontal whereas it is erect to semi-erect for 'PA1CN131'. The silique, beak and pedicel of 'PA3CN157' are longer than that of 'PA1CN131'. 'PA3CN157' has a longer beak than that of 'PPS01-140 A-Line'. The pedicel of 'PA3CN157' is shorter than that of '5440'. At maturity, the plant of 'PA3CN157' is shorter than those of the reference varieties. The seed coat of 'PA3CN157' is black whereas it is brown for 'PA1CN131'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'PA3CN157' is a male sterile line which contains the Ms8 gene construct in the heterozygous state. It was derived by crossing a pure selected line to a male sterile line used as the source of the bar and barnase genes. The pure selected line was crossed in 2011 at Bayer CropScience in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. 'PA3CN157' was selected in 2012 on the basis of male sterility stability, expression of tolerance to glufosinate-ammonium herbicide and good combining ability with numerous restorer lines. Other selection parameters included vigour, maturity, blackleg resistance, clubroot tolerance, increased seed pod shatter tolerance, oil content, fatty acid profile and glucosinolate content.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials conducted during the summers of 2014 and 2015 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan were set up in a RCB Design with 3 replications per variety. Each year, the plots consisted of 3 rows that were 6 metres in length with a spacing of 25 cm between rows and 50 cm between plots. The measured characteristics were based on 30 measurements of the cotyledon, leaf, flower and plant height and 60 measurements of the silique. The means were based on a two year average. Mean differences were significant at the 2% probability level based on LSD values.
