Summary: The cotyledon of 'PB2CN256' is larger than that of 'PPS01-140 B-Line'. 'PB2CN256' has few leaf lobes whereas 'PB0CN216' has many. The leaf of 'PB1CN256' is shorter than that of 'PB0CN216'. 'PB2CN256' has a shorter petiole than 'PB0CN216' and 'PPS01-140 B-Line'. 'PB2CN256' flowers earlier than the reference varieties. The petal of 'PB2CN256' is smaller than that of 'PB0CN216' whereas it is longer than that of 'PPS01-140 B-Line'. 'PB2CN256' has a shorter silique than 'PB0CN216'. 'PB2CN256' has a longer silique beak and pedicel than 'PPS01-140 B-Line'. 'PB2CN256' matures earlier than 'PB0CN216'. 'PB2CN256' is susceptible to glufosinate ammonium herbicides whereas '5440' is resistant.

Origin & Breeding History: 'PB2CN256' is the male fertile maintainer line of 'PA2CN156'. It was derived by backcrossing a pure selected line to a male sterile line used as the source of the bar and barnase genes. The pure selected line was backcrossed in Saskatoon, Canada in 2003. The final backcross was made in 2011. 'PB2CN256' was selected in 2012 for plant height, vigour, maturity, blackleg resistance, oil content, linolenic acid content, fatty acid profile and glucosinolate content.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials conducted during the summers of 2013 and 2014 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan were set up in a RCB Design with 3 replications per variety. Each year, the plots consisted of 3 rows that were 6 metres in length with a spacing of 25 cm between rows and 50 cm between plots. The measured characteristics were based on 30 measurements of the cotyledon, leaf, flower and plant height and 60 measurements of the silique. The means were based on a two year average. Mean differences were significant at the 2% probability level based on LSD values.
