'PPS01-137 A-line' is resistant to glufosinate ammonium (Liberty) while 'Quantum', 'Westar' and 'PPS01-137 B-line' are not.

Description:

'PPS01-137 A-line' is a male sterile inbred spring canola variety containing the bar and barnase genes. The cotyledons are narrow to medium in width and medium in length. Leaf blades are light green in colour with very few to few number of lobes. The leaf margin is sharp with a low to medium density of dentations that are shallow in depth. The leaves are short to medium in length and medium in width, with a short petiole. The yellow flower petals are medium in length and width. The horizontal siliques are short in length and medium to wide in width, with a short to medium beak length and a medium pedicel length. The plants are medium in height. Seed colour is black. 'PPS01-137 A-line' has low erucic acid content and very low glucosinolates. 'PPS01-137 A-line' is resistant to glufosinate ammonium herbicides.

Origin & Breeding History: 'PPS01-137 A-line' is a male sterile line which contains the Ms8 gene construct in heterozygous state. 'PPS01-137 A-line' was derived by backcrossing a doubled haploid line 98-48-069 to the male sterile line used as the source of the Ms8 gene. Doubled haploid line 98-48-069 was extracted from F1 generation derived from cross 97CGH398 / 97CGH403. 'PPS01-137 A-line' was selected in 2000 on the basis of male sterility stability, expression of tolerance to glufosinate ammonium herbicide and good combining ability with numerous restorer lines. Other selection parameters included height, vigour, maturity, black leg resistance, oil content, fatty acid profile, and glucosinolates content. Breeder seed production commenced in the 2002 season.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted at the Bayer CropScience facility in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2002, 2003. Plots consisted of 3 rows 6 meters in length with 50 cm row spacing. There were 2 replications laid out in a RCB design.
