'PPS02-144 A-line' is a male sterile inbred spring canola line containing the Ms8 gene construct in the heterozygous state. The cotyledons are medium in width and short to medium in length. Leaf blades are light green in colour with very few to few lobes. The leaf margin is sharp with a low to medium density of dentations that are medium in depth. The leaves are very short to short in length with a very narrow to narrow width and a short petiole. The yellow flower petals are short to medium in length and medium in width. The horizontal siliques are short to medium in length and wide in width, with a medium beak length and very short to short pedicel length. The plants are short to medium in height at maturity. Seed colour is black. 'PPS02-144 A-line' has low erucic acid content and medium glucosinolates. 'PPS02-144 A-line' is resistant to glufosinate ammonium herbicides.
Origin & Breeding History: 'PPS02-144 A-line' is a male sterile inbred line in the process of F1 hybrid production. 'PPS02-144 A-line' was derived by backcrossing a doubled haploid line 98-55-013 to the male sterile line used as the source of the Ms8 gene. 98-55-013 was extracted from the F1 generation derived from the cross 97CGH406/97CGH409. 'PPS02-144 A-line' was selected in 2001 on the basis of male sterility stability, expression of tolerance to glufosinate-ammonium herbicides and good combining ability with numerous restorer lines. Other selection parameters include height, vigour, maturity, blackleg resistance, oil content, fatty acid profile and glucosinolates content. Breeder seed production commenced in 2002.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted at the Bayer CropScience facility in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2003, 2004. Plots consisted of 3 rows 6 meters in length with 50 cm row spacing. There were 2 replications laid out in a RCB design.
