Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Camp Bulewhit' and 'Havibi806'

Summary: The leaf blade of 'PKM04' is narrow to medium width while the leaf blade of 'Camp Bulewhit' is broad. The main colour on the inner side of the corolla lobe of 'PKM04' is blue violet while it is violet blue for both reference varieties. The corolla lobe of 'PKM04' is moderately reflexing while it is straight for 'Camp Bulewhit' and very weakly reflexing for 'Havibi806'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'PKM04' originated from a population of Campanula seedlings that resulted from the hybridization between two proprietary PKM hybrid breeding lines. The planned breeding program aimed at creating new Campanula varieties with greater floriferousness, more colourful flowers and a plant growth habit with good, freely branching growth. The cross was made in 2012 by a breeder in Sohus, Denmark. The resulting seeds were harvested from the female parent and the resulting progeny were evaluated. The new variety was selected based on plant growth habit and flower colour. In 2013, after vegetative propagation evaluation, the final selection was made based on its upright, freely branching and compact growth habit and violet and white bi-coloured, broad, campanulate flowers.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'PKM04' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2015/2215, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trials were conducted by the National Institute of Agricultural Botany in Cambridge, United Kingdom in 2016. Colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
