Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'INCALDRISM' (Superbells Dreamsicle) and 'KLECA20428' (Superbells Double Amber)

Summary: The petioles of 'KLECA20459' are longer than those of both reference varieties. The flowers of 'KLECA20459' are double whereas the flowers of 'INCALDRISM' are single. When newly opened, the inner side of the corolla lobe of 'KLECA20459' is medium red whereas that of 'INCALDRISM' is orange red and that of 'KLECA20428' is dark yellow with medium yellow orange along the margin. When fully opened, the inner side of the corolla lobe of 'KLECA20459' is orange brown with red pink along the margin whereas that of 'INCALDRISM' is dark orange and that of 'KLECA20428' is light yellow with dark yellow along mid-vein and at base. When aged, the inner side of the corolla lobe of 'KLECA20459' is dark yellow orange and medium orange pink whereas that of 'INCALDRISM' is medium orange to medium yellow orange and that of 'KLECA20428' is white with dark yellow along mid-vein.

COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): when newly opened medium red (RHS N34B) with medium red (RHS 34A) near margin, when fully opened orange brown (closest to RHS 169C) with red pink (RHS N34C) along margin, when aged dark yellow orange (RHS N163D) and medium orange pink (RHS 35C)

Origin & Breeding History: 'KLECA20459' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder, Dominik Losert, in Stuttgart, Germany, in July 2015. The cross was made between the female parent designated 'CA-2013-0658' and the male parent variety 'Aloha Kona Hot Orange'. Seedlings were selected in April 2016 in Stuttgart, Germany based on flowering time, flower colour and flower pattern. The seedlings were evaluated in greenhouse trials from February to May of 2017, 2018 and 2019, and assessed for performance. 'KLECA20459' was selected for commercialization in April 2018, in Stuttgart, Germany.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'KLECA20459' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2021 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm diameter hanging baskets on April 26, 2021. Each basket contained 4 cuttings with a total of 5 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of 10 plants, on June 11, 2021. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on paired Student's T-tests.
