Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'USCAL51505' (Superbells Double Chiffon)

Summary: The plants of 'KLECA20428' are shorter than those of 'USCAL51505'. The leaves of 'KLECA20428' are longer than the leaves of 'USCAL51505'. The flowers of 'KLECA20428' have a weak to medium degree of lobing whereas the flowers of 'USCAL51505' have an absent or very weak degree of lobing. The corolla lobes of 'KLECA20428' have weak to medium conspicuousness of veins whereas the corolla lobes of 'USCAL51505' have absent or very weak conspicuousness of veins. When newly opened, the inner side of the corolla lobe 'KLECA20428' is dark yellow with medium yellow orange along the margin whereas that of 'USCAL51505' is light yellow orange. When fully opened, the inner side of the corolla lobe of 'KLECA20428' is light yellow with dark yellow along the mid-vein and base whereas that of 'USCAL51505' is light yellow orange. When aged, the inner side of the corolla lobe of 'KLECA20428' is white with dark yellow along the mid-vein whereas that of 'USCAL51505' is light yellow orange.

COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): when newly opened dark yellow (RHS 15A) with medium yellow orange (RHS 16B) along margin, when fully opened light yellow (RHS 15D) with dark yellow (RHS 15A) along mid-vein and base, when aged white (RHS NN155D) with dark yellow (RHS 15A) along mid-vein

Origin & Breeding History: 'KLECA20428' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder, Dominik Losert, in Stuttgart, Germany, in July 2015. The cross was made between the female parent designated 'CA-2013-0658' and the male parent variety 'KLECA16341'. Seedling were selected in April 2016 in Stuttgart, Germany based on flowering time, flower colour and flower pattern. The seedlings were evaluated in greenhouse trials from February to May of 2017, 2018 and 2019, and assessed for performance. 'KLECA20428' was selected for commercialization in April 2018, in Stuttgart, Germany.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'KLECA20428' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2021 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm diameter hanging baskets on April 26, 2021. Each basket contained 4 cuttings with a total of 5 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of 10 plants, on June 10, 2021. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on paired Student's T-tests.
