Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Sunbelao' originated from a controlled pollination, made from April to November, 2006, at Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan. The female parent was a proprietary calibrachoa variety designated '265-7' and the male parent was a proprietary calibrachoa variety designated '272-1'. Seeds from the pollination were germinated and grown to maturity. One plant was selected by the breeder in September 2007, in a controlled environment at Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan. The selected plant was propagated by cuttings and grown in a pot trial from April to September 2008. The new variety of calibrachoa was found to be distinguishable from any other varieties and was named 'Sunbelao'.

Tests & Trials: Trials for 'Sunbelao' were conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2011 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm hanging baskets on May 12, 2011. Each basket contained 4 cuttings with a total of 5 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on July 4, 2011. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
