Variety used for comparison: 'Liricashower Blue'

Summary: 'Sunbelkubu' is a calibrachoa variety that has more compact plants than 'Liricashower Blue'. The flowers of 'Sunbelkubu' are slightly smaller and can be distinguished from 'Liricashower Blue' by the colour of the inner surface of the throat, which is bright yellow in the candidate variety and yellowish white in the reference. The overall flower colour of 'Sunbelkubu' is a slightly different shade of violet from the reference.

'Sunbelkubu' is a calibrachoa variety with a pendulous growth habit, abundant branching and dense foliage. The stems are thin with no pubescence. The leaves are dark green, elliptic in shape and have a broadly acute apex. Pubescence on the upper and lower surfaces of the leaf is very sparse. The sepals are linear with sparse pubescence. 'Sunbelkubu' produces single, funnelform, blue-violet flowers. The inner side of the throat of the flower is bright yellow. The apex of the corolla lobe is obcordate.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Sunbelkubu' originated from crossing a wild type of petunia plant called 'A1' (female), native to Brazil to another wild type called 'B2' (male), also native to Brazil. The crosses took place at the Hakushu Nursery Centre for Suntory Ltd., Japan, in May, 1992. From the cross 5 seedlings were selected for decumbent habit and flower colour. These 5 seedlings were used as the female parent in a cross with the wild type 'B2' plant as pollen parent. From this cross 10 seedlings were selected and put into a flower potting and bedding trial from which 2 plants were selected in the summer of 1993. Finally one plant was selected in October 1995 as being distinguishable from any other variety. This selection was named 'Sunbelkubu'.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Sunbelkubu' were conducted in a greenhouse at Norseco Inc., Boisbriand, Quebec during the summer of 2000. The trials consisted of nine plants of each variety, grown in 25 cm hanging pots (3 plants per pot). Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 10 measurements.
