Origin & Breeding History: 'SMNBDW' was bred and developed by the breeder Timothy D. Wood, an employee of Spring Meadow Nursery, Inc. in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA. It originated from a controlled cross conducted in 2012 between the female parent designated 'UC 608' and male parent variety 'Pink Delight'. From the resulting progeny, a single seedling was selected in 2013 based on its compact growth habit, thick stems, short internode length, leaf appearance and texture, inflorescence size, flower colour and cold hardiness. The first asexual propagation of 'SMNBDW' was conducted by softwood cuttings in 2013 in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'SMNBDW' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring and summer of 2018 and 2019 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 12 plants of the candidate variety and 8 plants of the reference variety. All plants were grown from 11.5 cm rooted liners and transplanted into 13.5 litre containers on August 24, 2018. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety on July 18, 2019. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
