Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'DrisBlueSeventeen' ('4J 5'), 'DrisBlueEighteen' ('5J 2'), 'DrisBlueSixteen' ('46k203') and 'DrisBlueSeven'

Summary: The one-year-old shoot of 'DrisBlueFifteen' is greenish red, while the one-year-old shoot of 'DrisBlueSeventeen' is greyish, 'DrisBlueEighteen' and 'DrisBlueSixteen' are reddish brown, and 'DrisBlueSeven' is reddish yellow. The corolla tube of 'DrisBlueFifteen' has an absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the corolla tube of 'DrisBlueSeventeen', DrisBlueEighteen', and 'DrisBlueSeven' has an absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration and 'DrisBlueSixteen' has a very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The fruit cluster of 'DrisBlueFifteen' is medium dense whereas the fruit cluster of 'DrisBlueEighteen' is dense, and 'DrisBlueSixteen' and 'DrisBlueSeven' is sparse. The fruit of 'DrisBlueFifteen' has a calyx basin of shallow to medium depth whereas the calyx basin of 'DrisBlueSeventeen' is deep and 'DrisBlueEighteen' is very deep.

Description:

PLANT: strong vigour, semi-upright growth habit, fruiting on one-year-old shoots only, vegetative bud burst begins mid-season
ONE-YEAR-OLD SHOOT: greenish red, short to medium length internodes along upper half

LEAF: long, medium to broad, large length to width ratio, elliptic shape, medium to dark intensity of green upper side, entire margin

FLOWERING: begins early to mid-season on one-year-old shoots, medium to long inflorescence excluding peduncle
FLOWER BUD: medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration
COROLLA: ellipsoid shape
COROLLA TUBE: medium size, absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on outer side, ridges present

INFRUCTESCENCE: medium density
UNRIPE FRUIT: light to medium intensity of green colour, ripening begins early to mid-season on one-year-old shoots
FRUIT: large to very large, oblate in longitudinal section, soft, medium to high sweetness, low acidity
FRUIT SKIN: strong bloom intensity, dark blue skin (after removal of bloom)
CALYX BASIN: very large, shallow to medium depth
SEPALS: horizontal, incurving

Origin & Breeding History: 'DrisBlueFifteen' originated from a cross between the proprietary varieties 'MS122', as the female parent, and 'MS6', as the male parent, made in Payson, Arizona, USA. 'DrisBlueFifteen' was selected from the resulting progeny in September 2001 in Santa Cruz County, California, USA for its fruit quality, size, appearance, and plant health. Subsequent asexual propagation by softwood cuttings took place in Monterey County, California.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'DrisBlueFifteen' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2019/0284, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trial was conducted by the Direção Geral de Alimentação e Veterinária in Escaroupim, Portugal between 2019 and 2022.
